Sublime Dissension: Intersectional Approaches to the Construction and Reclamation of the Female Grotesque in Art and Visual Culture

Sublime Dissension is concerned with the intersections of class, race, sexuality and the body in the formations of the female grotesque. The research seeks to explore the question of how the supposedly "ugly" or socially undesirable "abjected" body can in fact produce radical delight, how supposed “disgusting” and “repulsive” images can actually be received with pleasure, and how the transgressive "dissenting" body can be politically and aesthetically subversive. Proposing that the viewing of the grotesque body could effect an embodied experience that involves the risk and dangers associated with the sublime.
