Steve Mumberson: new work for Wharepuke Art Center Sculpture Park , Kerikeri , New Zealand

Steve Mumberson is one of 38 artists who have produced works for a Sculpture Park walk opened during summer 2015  until September 2016. Each artist was ask to send in separate proposals for sculpture piece to line a trail through the park garden. The works are installed among the tropical plants of the garden and labeled with the artist various details. Sculpture project vary from static piece constructed of traditional materials or works that interact with the environment or vegetation all take inventive approach to either material or approach to sculpture.

Stephen Mumberson’s piece is called “Solar Ghosts“ using T-Shirts to create chlorophyll prints in the grass surrounding  the trail path. The imagery source is from cave art seen in the South West of France, particularly the early abstract forms and hand stencils. The artist commented:

The T-Shirt  is a cheap global garment often used to promote mass market commercial interest or cultural events. In a world of constantly flickering video images, shadows cast in the grass reflect our nervous times.”
