Simon Read at AAG Annual Meeting
24 - 28 February 2012, New York City

Simon Read organises session and presents paper

at the AAG Annual Meeting in New York City

Simon Read has organised the paper sesion Intervention and Embeddedness, Art Practice and Environmental Discourse at the AAG (American Association of Geographers) Annual Meeting which took place from 24 - 28 February 2012 in New York City.

The session focused on the use of art as a component of geographic enquiry. Simon's paper Art by Stealth departed from his experience in the field of flood risk management, and explored ways in which an artist can contribute credibly to public policy development. In his own words,
"Art by Stealth represents an acceptance of the difference between an artist’s intention and how it is construed. Working in a public arena often means that the autonomy of the artwork may not be as relevant as the primary need to clarify its application. Sometimes it is wiser to keep quiet about personal drivers for ideas and accept that if circumstances allow a project to happen, it might not resonate in the same way to all parties. If applied to the public sector, art can generate links that would not be available if approached by any other means."
