Alexandra Politis - Issues of Architectural Representation: stylistic discrepancies in the works of Britton & Soane
Alexandra is researching topographist John Britton and his relationship with Sir John Soane through a lens of architectural representation. This examination seeks to explore the stylistic choices these two perspectivists have made in producing both didactic drawings to accompany their literature, as well as images for the purpose of exhibition at the Royal Academy, or the Archaeological versus the Romantic. Why were these illustrations presented in books/exhibitions/guides, and what was their purpose? In addition, what has driven stylistic differences in these drawings, and what impact did these discrepancies have on their reception?
