Nicholas Mirzoeff: The Visual Commons #BlackLivesMatter

In Room G230, Grove Building
Middlesex University, Hendon Campus, London, NW4 4BT
ADRI Seminar Weds 13 January @4.30pm

In this informal presentation, Prof Nicholas Mirzoeff will talk about how his work has unfolded from The Right to Look to his current focus on the #Black Lives Matter movement and its (re)creation of what he calls the visual commons. He will analyze how BLM deploys blackness and the evolution of its signature tactics, namely 'Hands Up, Don't Shoot' and the die-in. With reference to the grand jury hearings concerning the shooting of Michael Brown, he proposes a tactic of 'persistent looking' that has emerged from this engagement as a transnational form of visual activism.

All welcome.
