Neelam Raina: Jammu Kashmir Flood Relief Fundraiser

Storytelling and Poetry from the Jammu and Kashmir regions.

Dr Neelam Raina, Senior Lecturer Fashion and Interiors, contributed to the organization of the Jammu & Kashmir Flood Relief Fundraiser, a cultural evening of stories and poetry from Jammu and Kashmir and a narration of Khushwant Singh's stories:

Vaibhav Kaul - will be reading his nazm Vaadee-e Ummeed / Valley of Hope which he wrote under his pen name Mahfouz.

Dr Seema Anand - retells Kushwant Singh's tales on the Underbelly of Interfaith in true KS style - Brilliantly funny, acidically honest, politically incorrect.

Dr Neelam Raina reads from Sudha Koul's Tiger Ladies, a loving memoir of the exotic food, ancient folklore, bawdy wedding traditions, gossamer-soft pashminas and the rhythms and colours of the valley itself.

Manu Khajuria Singh wlll be readings a peice of Dogri Literature that echoes childhood nostalgia, love, motherhood, nature, feminism, environmental concerns.

Dr Raina commented: "We are a civil society group of women who have joined hands to raise money to provide relief for the victims of the recent devastating floods in Jammu and Kashmir. We wish to raise money that shall support the fantastic work that The British Red Cross does through its Disaster Relief Fund and all proceeds from our event shall go to this fund. Jammu and Kashmir have experienced devastating floods this Sept. This north Indian State is known for extreme winters and the first snows have fallen. Winter is here and there are many who have no access to food or shelter. My research is based in Kashmir, and I am yet to locate some of the craftswomen I work with and the situation is grim. This is an attempt to help the region that has been the source of my knowledge, experience, research and writing. It is also home."
