CFP: MoDA Material Culture Research Forum 2018

Deadline: Monday 11th December 2017

Museum of Domestic Design and Architecture (MoDA), Middlesex University

The MoDA Material Culture Research Forum provides a friendly, informal space for researchers from any discipline, who work with material culture, to present and discuss their work with like-minded colleagues. We invite proposals which explore innovative material culture research from PhD students, post-docs, curators, and academics at any career stage. Research can be from any time period and location, though preference will be given to research which is closely aligned with the themes of MoDA’s collections.

The standard format for each session is a 20 minute paper from the primary presenter, followed by discussion of that research over tea and biscuits. If the presenter would also like to discuss a particular text or relevant article (circulated a week prior to the presentation) this is also encouraged.

Each session will also include an opportunity to closely examine one of the objects in MoDA’s extensive and world-renowned collections of textiles, wallpapers, designs, magazines, and domestic objects, providing opportunities to discuss and workshop a variety of methodologies for approaching these objects.

The dates for the Spring terms are: 12 January, 26 January, 9 February, 23 February, 9 March & 23 March. Please indicate any preferences of date in your proposal.

Proposals should include a 300 word abstract for your paper, and a short biography. Proposals for alternative sessions (eg. to examine a book proposal or journal article) are also welcomed. Please email proposals to the organisers, Dr Serena Dyer (s.f.dyer@mdx.ac.uk) and Dr Bethan Bide (B.Bide@mdx.ac.uk) by Monday 11th December 2017.
