Dr John Dack organizer of the 5th International Symposium on Music/Sonic Art: Practices and Theories

the Institut für Musik und Musikinformatik (IMWI), Karlsruhe, Germany

Dr John Dack, Senior Lecturer in Music and Technology, co-organized with his wife Mine Doğantan-Dack the Fifth International Symposium on Music/Sonic Art: Practices and Theories at the Institut für Musik und Musikinformatik (IMWI), Karlsruhe, Germany. The symposium took place from 26-29 June and attracted practitioner and scholars from Europe, America and Asia. In addition to organizing the symposium John Dack also presented his paper ‘From Description to Interpretation’ which investigated the problems encountered when transcribing and subsequently analyzing acousmatic music. Acousmatic music is particularly challenging to analysts as there is rarely any visual ‘score’ to facilitate the analysis. In addition to nearly 30 papers the symposium had the keynote presentation by Norwegian musicologist Rolf Inge Godøy and two concerts. IMWI has hosted the symposium for the last three years and is committed to continuing this relationship with Middlesex University.

Funding to attend the symposium was kindly provided by ADRI.
