Bharain Mac an Bhreithiún is a member of the Visual Culture and Curating Research Cluster.

Bharain Mac an Bhreithiún is Senior Lecturer in History of Design (Graphic Design) at Middlesex University. After having completed a PhD on Visual Identity in France since 1968 at Trinity College Dublin, he has continued to research and publish on subjects related to French graphic design, visual and material culture studies. Bharain's main areas of interest are the interface between language, design and urban space, with a particular emphasis on various aspects of cultural geography.

Bharain is developing research in the field of Linguistic Landscapes, a field of sociolinguistics that examines language choices in public space. His work focuses on the visual representation of languages in the environment in terms of typography and graphic design. Much of this work examines how language is visualised and represented in bilingual or multilingual urban environments or in regions where minority languages are in use. Both the visibility of a language and the way it is visually represented have implications for the sense of place of a given locale and Bharain's research works to reveal these underlying place-making discourses and their political significance. Recent work has focused on the role of place-names and street signs within the linguistic landscape.

Bharain Mac an Bhreithiún's other research interests include a range of specialisms within visual and material culture. These include Graphic Design and National Identity, the Bande Dessinée / Comic Strip culture of Belgium and France, the Belgian Interior, the Espresso Bar, the visual and material culture of Esperanto, tram culture and the politics of LGBT visibility.
