Dr Bharain Mac an Bhreithiún presents paper at 8th Linguistic Landscapes International Workshop

University of Liverpool, 27th -29th April, 2016

Dr Bharain Mac an Bhreithiún will be giving the paper “Erasure and Nostalgia in the Linguistic Landscapes of Lviv and Wrocław – historical and contemporary practices” at the 8th Linguistic Landscapes International Workshop to be held at the University of Liverpool, 27th -29th April, 2016. The theme of the workshop is “Regeneration, Revitalisation, Reterritorialisation” and Bharain will be speaking about a journey to the cities of Wrocław (Poland) and Lviv (Ukraine) and the ways in which language in public space can become the focus of political processes aimed at eradicating the cultural memory of former populations and conversely, of memorialising those same speakers for contemporary purposes. Bharain will create and draw upon a photographic archive of street name plaques, memorials and ghost signs in two cities that have experienced massive language transitions as a result of the shifting borders at the end of the Second World War in Europe.
